My New Non-Toxic Beauty Routine
I recently jumped on the natural beauty train and did a whole reboot & restock of my bathroom cabinets. I was able to purge any personal and skincare products with potential toxic ingredients thanks to the "Think Dirty" app. The app itself makes this otherwise overwhelming process easy by allowing you to scan the barcode or manually enter in a product number. The app then rates the product on a 0-10 scale based on its ingredients: 0 meaning it is non-toxic and safe while 10 means the product contains toxic & even known carcinogenic ingredients.
Above is a screenshot of the app on my phone. I went a little crazy (ok a lot crazy) and started scanning things all over the house. It was amazing to me how many of the products I considered "safe" actually contained some pretty scary ingredients. What I love even more about the Think Dirty app is that it provides education on the ingredients themselves, why they are used in the products, and any associated health impacts. Pretty nifty, huh?
I had a little fun on my next trip to CVS scanning some of my favorite brands and picking new products with the least amount of toxic ingredients. This 100% NOT sponsored but I wanted to share as I have been raving about this app to anyone that will listen! Download the app here.
Next up on this journey was a visit to my local clean beauty store, Follain. How cute is their store?! Follain was founded in 2013 by Tara Foley, a previous law student turned natural health and beauty advocate. Tara and her team are committed to curating effective, luxurious, and non-toxic products so when we think "health and wellness" this includes our skin! Did you know that 60% of what you put on your skin is absorbed systemically? Say no more, off to Follain I went! They have 3 stores in Massachusetts (Beacon Hill, Back Bay & seasonally on Nantucket). You can also order from them online. I picked up some great products (listed below) and have been using them for about a month or so now. Totally go check them out if you're in the area. I foresee a lot of trips back to Follain in my future!
Below are some of the products I've tried so far. I've been using them for about a month and maybe it's just me, but my skin feels "glowier" (go with it...) and I've seen less breakouts. Some of my favorite brands are: The Honest Company, Pai Skincare, Marie Veronique, Tata Harper, Toms, Indie Lee, & Glossier.
Lastly, if I was going to clean up my skincare I also felt compelled to clean out my makeup bag too! I don't wear a lot of makeup, mostly because I'm super prone to breakouts (ugh) but from time to time when I want to feel a bit more pulled together, I'll put on a face. From my basic research using "Think Dirty" & my time perusing Follain, I knew your average drugstore brand was not going to be the poster child for natural, non-toxic makeup. I have many friends (hi Kim & Kate!) who are beauty junkies like myself and they had some great suggestions including Glossier, BeautyCounter and Jane Iredale.
I was also thrilled when Julia, blogger extraordinaire at Gal Meets Glam posted about RMS Beauty. RMS is a company that produces organic, clean make-up that is safe for women to wear daily. The idea came to the founder, Rose-Marie Swift, after she experienced some serious health issues related to heavy metal exposure because of her many years as a makeup artist. Scary right? Follain actually carries the brand too so I was doubly convinced I needed to try them. Lucky for my inpatient self, I was able to order them off Amazon and guessed at my numbers (hey- I never said I was a beauty blogger!) The two products I ordered were the "Un" Cover Up (in 11) and the Lip2Cheek (in Smile). I'm no make-up artist but I really love how you can apply these two products using (clean) fingers and don't need any fancy application brush. The application goes on smooth, doesn't crinkle/crack, and looks natural. I've heard great things about their "Luminizers," which I think I'll purchase next!
So now I'm curious, have any of you jumped on the natural beauty bandwagon? What products have you used? Are you as obsessed with Think Dirty as I am? I can't wait to hear more in the comments below!
